Since we moved into our home we’ve always kept one room empty. A bedroom. We jokingly called it, “The Dyson Room” as that’s where we kept our beloved vacuum when it wasn’t in use. We love our Dyson and it does deserve its own room, but in all seriousness, we wanted that room to one day become a nursery. It took a few years longer than we planned (you can read all about our infertility journey here), but we finally got the chance to find the vac a new home when our daughter was born.
I wanted her room to feel girly, yet sophisticated. The palette, subdued and serene. Pink, but a less expected light, dusty pink. I honestly had never really seen what I was imagining, so off I went to create.
I did have one inspirational piece to start with, a painting of pink flowers in an ornate gold frame. It was hanging in my childhood home and when my mom decided to downsize, it made it to the garage sale pile. I always liked it. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I would do with it or where I could put it. But I didn’t want to let it go. So, I found it a new home.
While searching around the deep dark hole of Pinterest for design ideas I came across what absolutely had to be her crib – The Parisian Crib in vintage gold by Bratt Decor. My eyes lit up and my heart swelled with joy when I saw that beautiful gold crib. In true Practically Spoiled fashion, I was even able to score it for 40% off through Wayfair – SOLD!
Next, I found the glider and ottoman. I wasn’t sure about this purchase from a functionality standpoint, as I heard mixed feedback from other parents. Half told me they never really used it and half told me they used it everyday. I’m so glad I got it, because we fall into the latter category. Positioned right by the window, it’s a cozy spot to not only have a bottle or read a book, but also to just look outside and relax. This is my husband’s favorite part of her room because it truly is so, so comfortable. (Side note: The baby doll on the chair – her name is “Baby” and I’ve had her since the day I was born. Queue tears when Abby cuddles her!)
When looking for a dresser, I came across one of the most beautiful pieces of furniture. The Marielle Armoire by Restoration Hardware Kids. I never thought to do an armoire, but it fit in the space, provides great additional storage, and can grow with her when she is older. With incredible luck, I was even able to get it for 60% off retail by shopping the Restoration Hardware Outlet. (Which I think is now my absolute favorite store!)
Also found at the Restoration Hardware Outlet was a changing table that complimented the other furniture well. The Airin Spindle Changing Table. It had a few small cosmetic blemishes which allowed me to score it for 50% off the retail price. A little touch up paint and it was good as new. (At this point, my husband dragged me out of the store before I started redecorating the entire house…)
Once we got all the furniture into the room, it was time to add the details. I should note that the walls are Sherwin Williams, Revere Pewter. We painted the majority of our house that color when we moved in, this room included. I actually love what a flexible neutral it is, so I chose to not repaint.
The windows: I knew blackout shades were a must (daytime naps, sleeping past sunrise… a new mom can dream) so I splurged a bit on custom roman blackout shades from Blinds To Go. I layered them with gorgeous velvet curtains – in the most perfect shade of dusty pink (color was Ballet Pink actually) – from Half Price Drapes . This is not a sponsored post, but I just have to gush about the quality of these curtains. I was SO impressed, especially for the price. If you’re looking for curtains, I highly recommend them! The curtain rods are by Bombay and were purchased at a local discount curtain shop.
The bedding and linens:
• A comforter for a crib is really just for show, so I decided to skip that. I found simple Ecru sheets at Babies R Us (RIP) on super clearance before they went out of business.
• The chenille changing pad cover by Carters is from Amazon.
• I ordered an extra pink velvet curtain panel and sewed two pillows, one for the chair and one for the crib.
• The gorgeous floral pillow I found for just $19 at TJMaxx. The pillows are obviously taken out when Abby is in the crib, but they’re a nice, easy way to “make the bed” when she is not using it. Similar pillow covers found here.
• I went crazy trying to find a crib skirt, then decided to just sew one. We have an amazing independent fabric store not far from me that has an outrageous selection. I was able to find the exact shade of dusty pink as the curtains in a satin. It’s essentially ruffled panels tied onto the crib frame, so it’s fully adjustable as the crib drops to lower positions as she grows. I also made the crib bows out of the same satin, because this fancy crib deserves some bows.
The accessories:
• The lamp was another garage sale pile item, from my sister’s teenage room. It was silver, so I simply used acrylic paint to give it a similar gold finish as the bed. Isn’t it pretty?
• The table that holds the lamp is from Christmas Tree Shop. I picked it up for around $50, unfortunately this exact one is no longer available. I found something similar-ish here. It holds the monitor too, and is filled with lots and lots of headbands and bows in every color! (Girl moms, you NEED this bow set!)
• The mirror, oh how I LOVE this mirror, was $30 clearance at HomeGoods because it has a small piece chipped off at the bottom (which you would never know!) It was bright gold, so I again, used some paint to tone it down to the same color as the crib.
• The baskets under the changer are by Pillowfort, from Target. I don’t believe they are available any longer. They were bright white, so I gave them a quick coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White so they would better match the changer.
• The rug is by Safavieh. I ordered both a 5′ x 7′ rectangle and 6′ circle, but the circle won. I love how it fills the space and ties the room together.
• The side table is actually a plant stand from Hobby Lobby that does the trick for holding bottles and books.
• The diaper pail is by Ubbi. Thank you Ubbi for making a good looking diaper pail in a wonderful palette of neutral colors that don’t require expensive refills! Again, not sponsored, but I love this diaper pail!
• The flower mobile I made the day before I went in to be induced. Hubs thought a walk around the craft store might help wiggle the kiddo out, ha! Tutorial to come.
• The adorable play gym was a registry gift. It’s Monique Lhuillier for Pottery Barn kids and unfortunately is no longer available, but how sweet is it?
• The book on the bottom of the changer is called “Wish.” It’s a simple children’s story about waiting and waiting for your little miracle to arrive. Wonderfully relatable for fellow IVF parents or parents going through a long adoption process. I still get teary eyed when I read it.
And that’s the nursery! I’m bias, but I really love how it came out. It’s sophisticated, without being too fussy. It reads little girl without pink overload. Now if only she would sleep in her crib… HA!
Mother of 3 says
That is a stunning nursery! I love the soft color palette and so many of those pieces will serve her well beyond her baby years.
