If shiny objects distract you then you’re in trouble because the glitter trend is in full effect. Glittered shoes are everywhere with the oh-so-fabulous Miu Miu Booties leading the trend. Being Practically Spoiled, I didn’t want to spend a lot on glittered shoes and I wanted them to be unique, so I decided to DIY. For less than $20 I made a great pair of on trend shoes that no one else will have.
I used:
- Craft Glue (A.C. Moore Brand 99 cents)
- A Small Sponge Brush (A.C. Moore 49 cents)
- Extra Fine Silver Glitter (A.C. Moore $2.97 – used a 40% off one full price item coupon found here)
- Aerosol Extra Hold Hair Spray (Free, I had it!)
- Mossimo Booties (Target, clearance $14.98)
- Newspaper & an Empty Shoe Box (as to not make a glittered mess)
The first step was deciding what part of the shoe to glitter. Unless you’re doing the whole shoe, you need to select an area that has definitive edges or seams so it looks intentional. These booties have a buckled strap that I thought would be perfect to glitter.
I squeezed out some glue onto the newspaper and carefully using the sponge brush, applied it heavily but evenly to the entire front of the strap. I worked quickly as to not have the glue dry up on me. Then holding the shoe over the shoe box, I poured the glitter onto the strap. I didn’t worry about dumping too much or getting it on other parts of the shoe. The box will catch the excess glitter to dump it back into the container afterwards and the glitter will simply brush off the areas of the shoe that do not have glue on them. I shook off the excess glitter and then did the other shoe the same way. I let them dry for about 4-6 hours on the newspaper, then took them outside and hit the glittered area with some hairspray to set it in place.
Ta-Da! Glitter shoes! I love the way they came out. So much so, that I’ve had to refrain from glittering other shoes in my closet. This is a great way to give a new life to an old pair of shoes or to add some pizazz to a new pair.
