I have a thing for good looking cheap costume jewelry, especially earrings. But recently my ears have become quite sensitive to any material besides silver or gold (go figure.) I tried to pretend like it wasn’t true, until my earlobes were aching, stinging and bright red. Not willing to give up cheap costume earrings, I needed to find a solution.
If your ears are sensitive like mine, fear not! You can STILL wear fun costume jewelry! Here’s how:
You’ll need: Costume jewelry earrings that have a hook, needle nose pliers and sterling silver earring hooks. Earring hooks are available on Etsy, eBay or at your local Micheal’s, A.C. Moore or art/jewelry supply store. (I picked up a set of 20 on eBay for $5.00. If you buy from Micheal’s or A.C. Moore, be sure to check their website for a coupon!)
1. Using the pliers, remove the old hooks by widening the loop on the bottom of the that attaches it to the actual earring.
2. Take the new silver hooks and again use the pilers to open the loop on bottom. Try not to open the loop further than you need to. And be delicate! Silver is a very soft metal and manipulates easily.
3. Slip the new hook onto the earring. Make sure the hook is facing the correct way, then use the pliers again to tighten the loop.
4. You’re done! It’s that easy to simply upgrade your earrings and make them wearable once again. Sensitive ears rejoice!
